Ralph Waldo Emerson was only partly right when he announced: “Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.”
What he should have said was: “Build a better mousetrap and the world – or people with mice, at any rate - will beat a path to your door (but only if they know you’ve built it).”
It’s not, perhaps, quite as slick as the original, but it’s a lot more accurate. If you want customers for your product or your service then you really need to tell them about it. If no-one knows it’s out there, then no-one will buy it – rocket science it isn’t.
It simply isn’t enough to have a good product. Without good marketing and an effective media and PR strategy, that product will simply sit on the shelves.
Built a new mousetrap? Then make sure that you tell people why it’s better (but only people with mice – otherwise you are simply wasting money with poorly-targeted advertising).
